Making Your Hand
Each player determines his five card poker hand by making the best combination of the five common cards, known as 'the board,' and his two individual cards. He may use both of his hole cards, one card only, or none of his hole cards. Here are some sample hands.
Can you figure out what each player's best poker hand is and who has the best hand? Test yourself first, then look below to see how you did.
Notice that the very best hand started out as just two sixes in Jono's hand but became four 6s by the end of the deal for the best hand. There's also a full house, held by Mona who uses her two Queens with the Queen and two sixes on the board to make Queens full. This is the highest full house that is possible. There is no flush. A player in this hand would have to have two diamonds to make a flush -- combining them with the three diamonds on the board. If there had been four diamonds on the board then Mary, with her one Jack of diamonds, would have had a flush. Look at Horace and Erin's hands. They each have two pair, Aces and 6s. But Erin's hand is better since hers is Aces and 6s with a King kicker and Horace's is Aces and 6s with a Queen kicker. This happens a lot in hold'em. The fifth card often separates a winner from a loser. Notice finally that the worst two hands don't use their two hole cards at all. Their best hand consists of just the five cards on the board. They cannot improve it by using their hands. So they would 'play the board' as it is known in this game. If the board is the best hand anyone can make then all players still in the hand tie and split the pot.

Poker Betting Etiquette FAQ
While the rules behind exactly how much you can bet or raise for are fairly simple and easy-to-grasp, poker has an equal amount of betting etiquette rules it's important to understand as well.
It's the player's responsibility to pay attention to the bets and raises before and after the flop. Not doing so slows the game down and reduces the amount of hands players can see per hour.
What is 'Betting Out of Turn?'
Players are also expected to pay attention to the order of the action and not make any action, including betting, out of turn. Acting out of turn in particularly important because it gives the players still to act behind more information than other players have had access to.
Players can also put out different bet sizes to alter or influence the hand before it even gets to them. The dealer or floor person on hand will be forced to rule on which actions are binding and which bets must be returned but it's better to just not bet out of turn in the first place.
What is 'Splashing the Pot?'
While it may look good in the movies to throw a bunch of chips into the middle or shove your whole stack into the pile, it's considered poor etiquette and not encouraged in a real poker game or tournament.
Simply say 'all in' or slide the proper amount of chips over the betting line. The dealer will bring the chips in, confirm the amount and add them to the pot for you.
What is a String Bet?
String bets come in a couple of different forms but they all represent more or less the same thing - a bet that is not complete or done in one complete motion.
One form of string bet, for example, is moving a stack of chips over the betting line and then reaching back and putting more chips over the line again. That is illegal as you might be trying to gauge the reaction of someone with the first bet/motion and then adding more once you see the information.
Another form of string bet is announcing a bet of a certain size or a call first and then trying to add a raise on top. You must declare the full amount of the bet or put in the proper amount for it to be considered a legal raise.
If a player first puts in enough chips to call and then tries to add a raise on top it will only be considered a call and the player will have to take the raising chips back.
What is a Straddle Bet?
A straddle bet is made by the player to the left of the big blind. It's a bet that is twice the size of the big blind and must be made before the flop is dealt. A Sleeper Straddle is a straddle bet made by a player other than the player to the left of the big blind.
A mandatory straddle bet is something high-stakes players use to juice up the action in a cash game but it must be agreed to by all players before it can be put into the game.
When Is a Bet a Bet?
A bet is officially a legal bet when:
- Chips are moved forward and placed over the betting line on the table
- A verbal declaration of 'bet' or 'raise' is made when it is your turn to act
Moving your hand forward and then pulling it back before making a raise may still be considered a binding action depending on the ruling of the floor.
If you put a single chip in the pot that is bigger than the bet but you don't say 'raise' it is considered a call. If you try to make a raise but put in less than the required amount you'll be forced to add the remainder into the pot to make it a legal raise.
Can a Player Go 'All In' with Less Than the Bet/Pot?'
In a No-Limit game players can go all in for their entire stack at any time. If they have less than the current bet or pot they can still do so but they can win no more than their total investment in the pot from each player they beat.
Anything above the total of the all in goes into a side pot for the other players to contest.
If a player can't cover the ante or blinds in a pot that player is automatically all-in for the hand. Any chips are first applied to paying the ante and any extra goes to the blind.

The person that went all in would have to be the one who called clock, since they did not; it's a non-issue. Since the player did not call, it was not the dealers obligation to count the chips; players can count their stack to see what percentage would be all in (and other considerations, or just to take their time thinking.) I consider it a clever ploy to buy time that occasionally induces an error on another party's side.

If no limit rules are applied strictly, the dealer is not allowed to count the pot. This up to each player to know how much is in the pot. Any serious player will always know how much is in the pot. Nevertheless, this rule is not strictly enforced in some casinos where they allow the dealers to give a pot count.
Steven Martin 2017-04-05 12:05:11
I strongly disagree. The player with the option to call did not fold. Either he folds calls or clock should be called if he's taking too long. In any case it is not the dealer's choice. In this case the player with option to call has the advantage that the all in player turned his cards up too soon.

You are CORRECT in your actions. The player who turned his cards over prematurely is at fault. If someone wanted a chip count, YOU actually should have been counting the persons chips. If there was no verbal declarations by anyone other than the ALL IN guy..... then the ALL IN guy would win.
Jeff 2016-10-14 10:08:37
. After each card action (flop-turn-river).....the betting starts over fresh and new.
Jeff 2016-10-14 10:07:02
YES! You are correct. If you are the first better, you can bet ANY amount equal to or over the amount of the BB. You had the perfect example. Like I tell everyone.....Google NLH Poker Tournament rules and regs......print copies of the rules and hand them out to everyone. make everyone read it.
Jeff 2016-10-14 10:03:46
Not sure I completely follow. I know in most tournaments, lets say you have a stack of 4000 chips in your hand.....you move your whole hand holding those chips into the pot to call a 500 chip bet.....and only plan on dropping one chip from the stack you are holding and bringing back the other 3500 in your hand still.......most tournaments will make you put the whole amount you carried forward of the bet line into the pot as a raise. ANYTHING that crosses the bet line is considered in play as a bet. This is why you should verbally declare any action you intend to do.
Jeff 2016-10-14 09:51:23
You have to at least call a bet to stay active in a hand. Everyone can 'check' and you wouldn't be risking anything but the BB you called initially to see the flop. My advice is to Google 'Texas Holdem' rules and regs......and print them out!!!! Make him read them as well.
Jeff 2016-10-14 09:48:12
Absolutely NOT!!! Even at a - NLH cash table, well, any cash table for that matter.....players are not allowed to share chips. You aren't allowed to 'loan' chips to another player.....or sell them like at a cash table. No No No No!!!!

- How about this scenario..... You are at a 1/2 table... is the big blind and someone raises to an raise, which makes the min raise now or total. So far so good? And now down the line someone raises the bet up to , a raise over previously bet and called. What is the min raise now? , so you have to goto ? The casino ruling from the floor? The first raise establishes the 'new' (above the big blind min) min raise. So the raise is now which means a bet of is a legal call and raise. standard?? – user893 Apr 29 '13 at 0:06

Texas Holdem Betting Rules: No-Limit, Limit & Pot-Limit
By PokerListings.com Share:In the world of poker the popularity of No-Limit games is a relatively recent development. For many years, in fact, poker was predominantly a Limit or Pot-Limit game.
No-Limit poker only really took off once Doyle Brunson and his crew of Texas Road Gamblers introduced the game to Las Vegas casinos.
Poker Limit Vs No Limit
Ever since then No-Limit has steadily increased in popularity, exploding into the spotlight with Tennessee accountant Chris Moneymaker's m win in the 2003 World Series of Poker Main Event.
Even though No-Limit Texas Hold'em is the most popular form of poker being played today there are still many players who would rather play a Limit or Pot-Limit betting variant instead - with betting rules we'll explain below.
But given that No-Limit is the most popular betting variation today, we'll start with it first.
Uma Poker - Blog - Mastering Low Stakes PokerIf it is confusing, just remember this old poker adage: 'You can't raise yourself.' In No-Limit Hold'em, the minimum bet is usually the big blind. My local room 4 bets are the cap If the stakes are say 3/6 bets before and on the flop are 3 after the flop they are 6. Examples. You are UTG you can call 3 or make it 2 bets which would be 6, you could then be re-raised or '3 bet' which makes it 9, then somebody could cap it '4 bet' which makes it 12. on and after the turn, the minimum bet is twice the BB. suckouts usually happen because players are getting the odds to call most of the time. you should read small stakes holdem or Lee Jones limit holdem book for some good tips. + 0 raises Raise Add 4INSTANT to Rail- Reply

USUALLY but not at ALL palces 1 bet and 3 raises capped once heads up unlimited betting great game but depending on the players style of play u will get sucked out a lot. Very different than NL due to the fact it is very hard to pull off a river bluff unless the other player has complete air or he thinks u make have hit a flush/straight/bigger card than his simply because he only needs to call one more bet. It is not rare to see a player call u down with ak, aq high or a pocket pair of 3's if he thinks u were on a draw. Once at a table for a long period of time u REALLY need to switch up play. Say you almost always check raise or re-raise flop draws a good player will notice this and if no srtaight/flush card comes he will def pop u on the river with almost any 2 cards. Also if u are new to limit i have player 1/2 to 100/200 and no matter what limit you play there is always someone will call you down with nothing and try to catch/ go runner runner on you. It actually happens more at the higher limits than the lower with exception of 1/2 and 2/4. break down (from my experience) 1/2, 2/4, 3/6- new players, people who play for fun 5/10, 8/16, 10/20- mediocre players mixed with some good players who play part time for a living or for fun 15/30, 25/50, 30/60, 50/100- good players, sharks, donks with money, semi-pros, pros anything higher- pros, semi-pro, rich + 0 raises Raise Add VitoRoma to Rail- Reply

Online limit is 4 bets cap= 1 bet and 3 raises Live limit is 5 bets cap= 1 bet 4 raises(but no cap heads up on river) The preflop and flop bet/raises are in the increments of the small bet of the game played(5/10 limit, this would be 5 pre and flop) Turn and river bet/raises are in the increments of the big bet of the game played(5/10 limit, this would be 10 turn and river) As for the suckouts, that is just a major part of limit since you almost always have odds to draw. The game is all about learning to extract as many bets when being the statistical favorite in the hand and saving yourself as many bets when you are not. Thanks guys thankyou very much.! The trouble i was having was trying to do a search and learn what the bet amounts & bet rules are in limit holdem, and when you try and word that in a search you get every answer but what you wanted. So in a 1 -3 game the most you can raise pre flop and on the flop is 3 and that can happen at most 4 times. ? yes. On the turn and the river the most your can raise in a 1 - 3 game would be 6 and that can happen at most 4 times. ? yes! No wonder you can't protect pocket KK or AA. I lost with them both (straight and a flush and the other guy had 2 pair LOL) and every time i tried to raise (post size bet) the dealer said you can't bet that much :( It seems like there are at min 3 players per pot. Yikes! + 0 raises Raise Thread Starter Add pnewbk to Rail- Reply
